SJC Brooklyn’s computer club SJC² took a field trip to Manhattan for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Google New York offices on Nov. 13. It’s the third time since 2016 that St. Joseph’s students had the chance to visit the facilities of the multinational tech company.
Google employees Jaime Irvine and Alec Mori led the students throughout the 8th Avenue offices. During the tour, they stopped in one of Google’s high-end conference rooms. While there, students asked questions about a myriad of topics. They asked their tour guides about technical interview tips and what it was like being a “newbie” on the job.
Bryan Alvarez, a senior computer science major who has attended all three Google visits, said the field trip is his favorite event of the year.
“You can never say no to a Google visit,” Alvarez said. “There is always something new to explore.”
Salim Arfaoui, an SJC Brooklyn mathematics and computer science instructor and the founder of SJC², said every detail of the trip was terrific — from the walking tour to the on-the-house lunch in tech-giant’s culturally-diverse cafeteria that overlooks the Manhattan skyline.
“We don’t just want our students to acquire work skills from their education; we want them to get exposure to a real work environment,” Arfaoui said. “Our field trip to Google was a rousing success.”
