Oct. 2 — SJC: 100 Years Young (TOP TWEET OF THE MONTH)
St. Joseph’s College opened its doors Oct. 2, 1916. The opening was written about that day in the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper — next to an article debating the role alcohol could potentially play in the mental deficiency of children. A century later, a celebratory 100th birthday notice was sent via tweet — next to a list of our weekly social faves.
Oh how the times have changed.

Oct. 4 — The Nature of a Founders Day Lecture
Two days after our 100th birthday, the 2016 Founders Day lecture, “From Triangle to Circle: Human Identity as an Ecological Challenge,” was delivered by S. Elizabeth Johnson, C.S.J., Ph.D. S. Elizabeth revisited the notion that, when compared to other living things, humans are typically placed atop a triangle — at the apex with God’s creation below. She urged those in attendance to consider creation equally valuable as human life. Not a triangle with us atop it, but rather a circle with us included. “Think Lion King,” she said.
Oct. 4 — Marie Ponsot: Poet, Activist, SJC Legend
That same day, famed poet and alumna Marie Birmingham Ponsot ’40 was celebrated at a Brooklyn Voices event. An impressive lineup of poets was on-hand to honor Ponsot — including Edward Hirsch, editor of this year’s Best American Poetry anthology and chancellor of the Academy of American Poets; and Jackson Taylor, director of SJC’s Writers Foundry M.F.A. and co-founder of the graduate writing program at The New School.
Oct. 5 — A Testament to Following Your Dreams
Lisann Valentin ’01 spoke at SJC Brooklyn Oct. 5, sharing her career journey as an attorney-turned-actress and contributor to The New York Times bestselling anthology “Eat Pray Love Made Me Do It: Life Journeys Inspired by the Bestselling Memoir.” Valentin spoke about having the courage it takes to chase your dreams.

Oct. 16 — SJC Brooklyn’s Walk in the Park
SJC Brooklyn groups joined the Making Strides effort at Prospect Park, helping raise more than $420,000 toward cancer research. Among those representing St. Joseph’s were the Beta Upsilon Delta sorority, the Alpha Phi Delta fraternity and the SJC Brooklyn honors program.
Oct. 15 — Alumna to Sister
Sister Mary Preenika Dabrera, C.S.J., a 2014 SJC Brooklyn graduate with a B.S. in Organizational Management, professed her final vows of chastity, poverty and obedience in the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph Oct. 15 at the Sacred Heart Chapel in the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brentwood, New York.
Oct. 18 — What is Biofilm?
Michael Hanophy, Ph.D., of the Department of Biology delivered a Common Hour lecture about the impact of scientist Alexander Fleming and the treatment of biofilm-related infections suffered by soldiers during World War I.
Oct. 20 — To Google, and Beyond
Aspiring tech majors at SJC Brooklyn had an experience of a lifetime Oct. 20 when they received a behind-the-scenes tour at Google’s New York City office. Organized by SJC Brooklyn’s computer science club SJC Squared, the field trip provided the 25 students with first-hand insight on the culture of the tech industry.
Oct. 28-31 — “This is Halloween”
From spooky movies, books and haunted location suggestions, SJC’s Halloween stories shook our audience to its core! Why not take another gander and re-shake yourself, just to be safe?
