Did you know February 17 is National Random Acts of Kindness Day?
It’s great to have a designated day of kindness, but there’s never a bad time to be kind. Every day, you can make simple small choices to lift up the spirits of those around you. If you’re ever in doubt about what qualifies as a “random act of kindness,” read on. And if you think you’ve got kindness figured out, how dare you! Kindness means never considering yourself too important to read blog posts about kindness.
1. Keep your campus clean while at school— and take in your neighbor’s garbage pails at home.
Who here has ever forgotten to bring in their garbage pail? I know I have. Before the wind carries your neighbor’s empty pails halfway across the block, do a solid and carry those unattended pails to safety.
2. Purchase a cup of coffee/tea for a stranger.
Coffee isn’t that much money. Tell the barista that you’ve got the next person in line’s order. Unless the person behind you orders for their entire class. Then say, “Oh I was just kidding about that.” And carefully sneak away while clutching your vanilla latte.
3. Sponsor a snack!
Tape cash to the vending machine so that the next person who comes to get a snack, gets it paid for. The definition of kindness is an unexpected Snickers at an unexpected time.
4. Hold the door for people … lots of people.
As Game of Thrones shows us, there’s nothing kinder than holding the door for a stranger or a loved one.
5. Leave an inspirational note taped to the bathroom mirror in the restroom.
All of us can use a pick-me-up. Some days more of us than others. Leave behind a positive message to inspire someone. You never know the power that a little Post-It can have.
6. Write a card/letter to someone serving in our military.
There’s never a bad time to send a warm letter to a military member serving overseas. If you’re feeling extra kind, include a care package with such essentials as candy, magazines and books.
7. Bring a basket of water/snacks to postal, delivery or maintenance workers.
It doesn’t cost much to show someone you appreciate the work they do. And that little display of care can go a really long way in the lives of others.
8. Donate food to a local church pantry.
Winter can be especially bitter and downright cruel to the less fortunate. Try to take some time to donate food to your local church pantry and warm clothes to good will organizations, such as One Warm Coat.
