Three SJC Brooklyn alumni who participated in SJC Brooklyn’s Academic Center for English Language Studies (ACES) program are attending the prestigious Microsoft Research Data Science Summer School in New York City.
The graduates — Naomi Moreira, Roymil Terrero and campus 2019 valedictorian Adnan Hoq — were selected to take part in the “DS3” program, which began June 11 and runs until Aug. 2.
“I couldn’t be prouder of both our students and the ACES Program; they truly represent the best of what a St. Joseph’s education has to offer,” SJC President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., said.
“To have a single student selected for DS3 is a high honor, but to have three in the same year from the same college illustrates what a gifted faculty coupled with an inclusive supporting learning community can accomplish.”

Taught by Leading Scientists
With an emphasis on increasing diversity in computer science, the summer school is taught by leading scientists at Microsoft Research, and is held at the new Microsoft Research office in the heart of Manhattan. Each student receives a $5,000 stipend for participating in the program, as well as a laptop.
“From this program, I hope to gain a comprehensive knowledge of the core concepts of Data Science,” Hoq said. “Moreover, I want to master various state-of-the-art tools, methods and applications of data science by actively participating in every aspect of the program.
“Most of all, I am looking forward to expanding my network and building a strong and healthy relationship with Microsoft and my fellow students of the summer program,” he added.
