St. Joseph’s University, New York is now accepting applications for the 2024 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) program.
Funded by SJNY’s generous donors, SURF provides students of all disciplines the chance to explore a research topic of their choosing, all while getting paid to do so.
“My favorite part of the SURF experience was bringing my vision to life, and conducting my own research while being guided with the expertise of someone who has been in the field of psychology and has worked as a researcher,” shared Blanca Reyes, who received the fellowship in 2022 and graduated with a B.A. in Psychology as a Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC) from the Long Island Campus in 2023.
The 2024 Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship will provide $4,000 stipends for eight students to work on their research projects for 10 weeks this summer, which is the equivalent of 20 hours per week at $20 per hour.
Open to first-year students through juniors, recipients not only get to participate in a unique undergraduate research experience, but they also get to present that research at SJNY’s very own annual Student Research Symposium the following spring.
This year’s application deadline is Friday, March 29, at 5 p.m.

Any questions can be directed to Michael Magee, Ph.D., at mwmagee@sjny.edu (Brooklyn) or Andrea Stadler, Ph.D., at astadler@sjny.edu (Long Island).
“Research opens a whole new avenue for students with any degree in general,” said Dr. Stadler, associate chair and associate professor of chemistry, as well as director of undergraduate research at the Long Island Campus. “It helps them realize the other things you can do with your degree. Just sitting in a lecture, they don’t always get that.”
