St. Joseph’s College hosts its fourth annual Giving Day fundraising campaign on April 6, benefiting nearly 20 college initiatives.
Among the causes are the purchase of wound care mannequins for the nursing skills lab at both campuses, an update to the outdoor space of the Clare Rose Playhouse at SJC Long Island, and support for the relaunch of the Writer’s Foundry Review at SJC Brooklyn.
The 24-hour fundraiser celebrates St. Joseph the Worker Day.
“It is so gratifying to see these valuable project ideas come to fruition through the generosity of our community,” said Flavio Bollag, SJC’s executive director of development. “Each year, Giving Day surprises us with the overwhelming response. SJC is a community that cares — and that is demonstrated with generous Giving Day donations year after year.”
On Giving Day 2021, 556 donors gave $71,700 to support 13 separate fundraisers, each providing students with the means to have transformative experiences at SJC.
Supporting St. Joseph’s College
Many of the featured projects directly support students.
The BSN Clubs on both campuses are campaigning to purchase wound care mannequins for the nursing skills labs. The mannequins would help students learn to properly care for wounded patients, preparing them for clinicals and nursing rotations.
Support for veterans is at the forefront of one Giving Day project at SJC Long Island. Donors can fund the integration of a student veteran into the existing student Peer Health Education Program, which provides student veterans with critical one-on-one veteran peer counseling, enhances military/veteran cultural competency, supports diversity and inclusion, and promotes campus and community connectedness.
Also, at SJC Long Island, a Giving Day fund was established to update the outdoor space at the Clare Rose Playhouse on Patchogue Lake, and create an outdoor classroom and relaxing space. The playhouse is a major teaching facility for the College’s theater courses and is a training ground for young actors.
At SJC Brooklyn, donors can support the re-launch of The Writer’s Foundry Review, a literary journal that publishes the work of thew campus’ Creative Writing MFA students. The money raised will help pay for printing costs, fellowships for student editors, industry membership fees, and a trip to the Association of Writers (AWP) conference in Philadelphia.
Donors may also support the Student Resource Fund for the Academic Center for English Language Studies (ACES) at SJC Brooklyn. The fund subsidizes a one-time assistance grant, which helps a student in need of such necessities as books, technology and transportation.
“Each and every gift really matters,” Bollag said. “Last year, the average gift was less than $25, and they came together to make an immediate impact on our students and programs.”
