The Long Island Campus’ Student Veterans of America (SVA) chapter hosted a Boot Camp Experience on Tuesday, April 18, that encouraged classmates to compete in fitness challenges prepared by U.S. military branches, while giving students the chance to interact with members of law enforcement.
“The Boot Camp Experience was organized to show recognition to military branches, as well as federal, state and local law enforcement agencies,” explained club vice president Nathan Gardner. “The event helps bridge the gap between these agencies and civilian lives.”
Co-hosted by the Office of Military and Veteran Services, the daytime event included such fitness challenges as pull-ups, push-ups, planking and resistance sprint drills. Students who completed every fitness challenge received a free SVA t-shirt.
“Students, faculty and individuals at the event could interact with the different agencies and see types of career opportunities as well as attempt military exercises,” Gardner said. “The SVA is grateful for all the agencies and organizations that attended to make the event a great experience at St. Joseph’s University.”
In addition to interacting with various members of the U.S. military branches, students interacted with law enforcement representatives, including the FBI, U.S. Marshals, Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, Southhampton Police Department and New York State Police.
Also in attendance was U.S. Air Force Veteran Kevin Hertell — the founder, president, executive director and creator of the Suicide Awareness and Remembrance (SAR) Flag. Last year, he spoke at the University’s Veterans Day Celebration.
“All 26 organizations — from local to national and federal levels — came together to show support for the SVA in their mission to connect with the student,” club president Eric D’Arce said. “Veterans not only found resources, but also connected other students to resources and career possibilities of their own.”
