Recognizing Excellence
April 15 was a day of honoring academic excellence on St. Joseph’s University, New York’s Long Island Campus. During Common Hour, a select group of students gathered in the Knapp Swezey Multipurpose Room in the Student Center for a private luncheon. It was here that they were joined by their peers and professors in being recognized for their academic achievements as they were inducted into the University’s various honor societies.
The luncheon was opened by SJNY President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D. who congratulated the students on their accomplishments and assured them that the best is yet to come. From here Associate Professor and Chair of the Honors Committee Lisa Tarfuo, Ph.D. announced this year’s inductees into the Gamma Tau Delta, Delta Epsilon Sigma and Kappa Gamma Pi Honor Societies.
One by one students were called up to receive to receive cords to wear with their cap and gowns during Commencement.

Also presented during the event were recipients of the University’s Thomas J. Wendt ’88 Alumni Scholarship and the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph Endowed Scholarship by Lisa Galasso-Werner ’08, M.S. ’13, MBA ’13, Director of Development of Consortium giving at SJNY.
The Thomas J. Wendt ’88 Alumni Scholarship is in memory of former SJNY student leader and employee Thomas J. Wendt, established by his friends, family and the University community. It was awarded to graduating English major Victoria Corcoran ’26, who was recently named this year’s valedictorian for the Long Island Campus.
Meanwhile, the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph Endowed Scholarship — which provides financial support to a student who has chosen to live a life characterized by the virtues of the Sisters of St. Joseph — was presented to recent criminal justice graduate Andrea Lopez ’25.
“On this beautiful day, we were blessed with receiving recognition for all the hard work we put in during this journey at St. Joseph’s. I just want everyone to keep the hard work going and continue to believe in yourself,” said Lopez.
