August belonged to the alumni of St. Joseph’s University, New York. With the summer season coming to an end, University alumni had the opportunity to mix, mingle and network at a series of events hosted across Long Island and New York City. From baseball games to dinner and drinks by the shore, there was plenty to see and do this summer with members of the SJNY community.
Long Island Ducks vs Staten Island FerryHawks
Alumni and their families gathered at Fairfield Properties Ballpark on Saturday, Aug. 1 to watch the Long Island Ducks square off against the Staten Island FerryHawks for SJNY Baseball Night. Alumni, students, staff, family and friends were all welcome to witness a battle of the two islands, with the Ducks defeating the FerryHawks 20-6. In keeping with Long Island Ducks tradition, the game was followed by a fireworks spectacular.
Rockaway Summer Social
It was a beautiful sight to behold atop the Rockaway Hotel on Monday, Aug. 17 as SJNY hosted its Rockaway Summer Social. Guests were joined by St. Joseph’s University, New York President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., for a gorgeous summer evening featuring food, drinks and stunning views of Rockaway Beach.
“It turns out a St. Joe’s connection, a summer evening and a rooftop in Rockaway are a pretty good combination! I have loved watching the Rockaway Summer Social become a tradition our alumni look forward to each summer,” said Sylvie Brown, Associate Director of Alumni Engagement at SJNY.
A portion of the proceeds from the evening went toward the University’s Student Emergency Fund, which supports students facing unforeseen hardships that might impede their progress. Alumni events serve as a wonderful way to support the University, reconnect with old friends and forge new bonds with fellow alumni across generations.
“We’re now seeing graduates from different decades and stages of life reconnect with old friends, meet fellow alumni for the first time and find that they already have something in common: St. Joe’s. That’s the beauty of the work we do: creating opportunities for those connections to continue and new ones to begin,” Brown continued.
Alumni Night Out in West Sayville
Not far from SJNY’s Patchogue Campus, alumni got together for a night at the Mansion at West Sayville. The event, held on Wednesday, August 19, at the waterfront venue, offered guests the opportunity to connect with fellow alumni while also raising money for the Student Emergency Fund.
“It was so wonderful catching up with my former classmates and reminiscing about the good old days,” said Lisa Galasso-Werner ’08, MS/MBA ’13, Director of Development & Consortium Giving at SJNY.
She continued, “It was even more meaningful to come together while supporting SJNY’s Student Emergency Fund, one of the most needed resources for our students.”
SJNY President Boomgaarden was also in attendance to thank guests for their generosity and continued support of their community.
More Events to Come
While the summer may be drawing to a close, there are still more events for alumni to experience. SJNY Brooklyn will celebrate the Classes of 1976 and 2001 on their 50th and 25th anniversaries, respectively. Meanwhile, on Long Island former student-athletes will have the chance to reunite with old teammates during Golden Eagle Spirit Fest on Saturday, Oct. 24.
It all culminates with the main event on Friday, Nov. 6 — the University’s 6th Annual Esse Non Videri Gala, a milestone celebration honoring the outstanding achievements of SJNY’s alumni and raising money for student scholarships.
