Nearly one in four female college students are sexually assaulted during their time in school, according to the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization (RAINN).
Sexual violence is a major public health, human rights and social justice issue. To raise awareness and educate about the topic, St. Joseph’s College is participating, along with colleges and universities across the nation, in Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). The theme for 2017 is Engaging New Voices, and St. Joseph’s College encourages its students to speak out and educate themselves on sexual assault awareness through a series of events this month.
All events will occur at Common Hour, 1-2 p.m., unless otherwise indicated.
April 6 • Peer Health Educators’ Workshop
SJC Long Island • O’Connor Hall, Room N108 — Peer health educators will be available with materials and to answer questions and speak with students. An information board with facts on domestic violence and sexual assault will be displayed in the cafeteria and the Student Lounge. Fliers providing information about domestic violence and sexual assault will also be displayed around campus by Campus Ministry.
April 10 • An Unheard Vote: Sexual Assault and Risk Behavior Awareness
SJC Brooklyn • Tuohy Auditorium — Guest speaker Elaine Pasqua will offer an upfront and frank presentation on alcohol, relationships, bystander education and high-risk behaviors.
April 24 • NYS Police Campus Sexual Assault Victims Unit Workshop
SJC Long Island • O’Connor Hall, Room W308 — All are invited to a workshop conducted by the New York State Police Campus Sexual Assault Victims Unit on health relationships, sexual assault, myths and culture, and affirmative consent. Light refreshments will be provided.
April 25 • NYS Police Campus Sexual Assault Victims Unit Workshop
SJC Long Island • O’Connor Hall, Room W308 — All are invited to a workshop conducted by the New York State Police Campus Sexual Assault Victims Unit on the psychology of trauma, domestic violence, stalking and the aftermath. Light refreshments will be provided.
April 26 • “Speak Out” Circle
SJC Long Island • Center for Wellness — Join us at a special “Speak Out” Circle for survivors of sexual violence, sponsored by the SJC Center for Wellness.
April 27 • Peer Health Educators’ Workshop
SJC Long Island • Location TBA — Peer health educators will sponsor a workshop by the CVC on ‘Bringing in the Bystander’. Peer Health Educators will have tables of materials and will be available to speak with students in the Student Lounge.
