2016 was a banner year for SJC Brooklyn. A centennial celebration carried us through the seasons, as the school held a special series of lectures, hosted honored guests and and saw a dramatic boost in enrollment.
What does 2017 hold? We can only hope for as much excitement as 2016. Here now, is our year in review.
January 2016
An exciting new opportunity for graduate students. A new graduate degree, M.S. in Forensic Computing (MSFC), was announced. Intended for practitioners in information technology, criminal justice and accounting, and for students who want to embark on a career in these growing and expanding fields, MSFC enrolled its first students this past fall.
Sharing the wealth we already have. Author and activist Colin Beavan read from his newest book, How to Be Alive, in a conversation with ABC’s Dan Harris, as SJC kicked off its 2016 Brooklyn Voices Series.
A legacy leaves us. S. John Raymond McGann, C.S.J., passed away Jan. 6 at 91. During her longstanding career at the College, she made extraordinary contributions to SJC Brooklyn and SJC Long Island. She served as chairwoman of the Department of Education, and remained lovingly devoted to SJC since 1956.
Introducing Vandy. SJC Brooklyn’s new mascot, Vandy the Bear, debuted at an alumni day basketball doubleheader.

February 2016
Celebrating our SJC sweethearts. Since SJC Brooklyn went coeducational in 1970, dozens of alumni have found their sweethearts in SJC’s classrooms and libraries and while participating in extracurricular organizations. In honor of Valentine’s Day, SJC was happy to salute some of the many alumni who came to St. Joseph’s as individuals and left with a love to last a lifetime.
Showcasing A Little Life. Renowned author Hanya Yanagihara launched the paperback version of her novel, A Little Life, at the second installment of Brooklyn Voices. The 720-page novel was discussed with Isaac Fitzgerald, editor for Buzzfeed Books.
Our Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Women’s volleyball middle hitter Lauren GaNun was named the Skyline Conference’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year, given to the player who carries the highest grade point average for the fall semester in each of the conference’s seven sponsored fall sports.
Hill Center is LEED Certified. The LEED rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is the foremost program for buildings, homes and communities that are designed, constructed, maintained and operated for improved environmental and human health performance.

Ride For Life. On March 1, representatives from Ride For Life visited SJC Brooklyn to spread awareness of ALS and encourage students to help donate for a cure.
Hosting a national psychology conference. On March 11-12, SJC Brooklyn played host to the 2016 Division 36 Mid-year Conference on Psychology, Religion and Spirituality. The two-day event featured workshops, paper and poster presentations, and guest speakers from renowned institutions. Visitors arrived from 26 states, as well as international guests from Taiwan, Canada (Ontario and Quebec), Georgia, India, Belgium and Germany.
Michael Megafu reigns. Highlighting an outstanding four-year career on the hardwood, senior Michael Megafu was named to the 2015-16 Academic All-America® Division III men’s basketball second-team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Hinduism and Universality in Religion. As the eighth installment of the annual Dr. Reza Khatib and Mrs. Georgianna Clifford Khatib Lecture series, St. Joseph’s College had the honor of hosting Dr. Kusumita P. Pederson, professor of religious studies at St. Francis College.

Alternative Spring Break 2016. While others were vacationing for their spring break, SJC Brooklyn and SJC Long Island student volunteers traveled to South Carolina to restore homes devastated by mass flooding.
Party With Consent. On April 4, Party With Consent founder Jonathan Kalin spoke with students at SJC Brooklyn about sexual assault awareness.
Mourning a memory. New York Times Bestselling author Charles Bock presented his latest novel, Alice & Oliver, in a discussion with writer Hannah Tinti for April’s Brooklyn Voices installment.

An internship of a lifetime. Freshman Mayssa Gregoire gained a place in a highly exclusive fellowship in Japan as a Nakatani RIES fellow at Osaka University, taking on a 12-week, research internship in science and engineering.
The Right Side of History. Political analyst Michelle Bernard presented the 2016 Presidential Lecture “More Than Single-Issue Voters: How Today’s American Women Are Changing the Face of Feminism.”
A New Option for Psychology Majors. SJC announced the addition of a new specialty track in industrial-organizational psychology to its B.A. in Psychology, at SJC Long Island and SJC Brooklyn.
SJC Brooklyn’s Class of 2016. More than 1,500 family and friends joined 357 graduates at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge on the Friday before Memorial Day Weekend for St. Joseph’s College New York’s 97th annual commencement ceremony.

Making a French connection. We documented the European travels of SJC students, who – thanks to SJC’s Global Studies program, made new friends and memories across France and Italy.
A new opportunity for nursing. SJC introduced the new Master of Science in Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP) program, admitting its first class in fall 2016 at SJC Brooklyn and SJC Long Island.

A new VP for Academic Affairs. Barbara Garii, Ph.D., formerly the dean of LIU Post’s College of Education, became the College’s new vice president for academic affairs at SJC Brooklyn.
Beating the Odds. Pan Am valedictorian Amarfi Collado defied odds and overcame challenges on her way toward an undergraduate career at SJC.
Just keep swimming. SJC Brooklyn athletics announced its newest addition, men’s swimming, for the 2016-17 season.
SJC at the DNC. Three students were part of an elite group from colleges and universities who attended the 2016 Democratic National Convention at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia from July 25-28.
Catching ’em all! SJC’s Dr. Garii and Dr. Frost discovered PokemonGO, and shared the SJC community essential tips for success.

A Glimpse of Love. Two alums from SJC Brooklyn (Christian Branch ’11 and Adam Mace ’08) took the New York City Fringe Festival by storm with their gospel musical,”Mother Emanuel.”
Try everything. At their first day at St. Joseph’s College Brooklyn, students found out exactly what sets the school apart during transfer and new student orientation.
Best of Both Worlds. Living and studying at SJC Brooklyn — an inside look at the unique dormitory life at the St. George Hotel.
Our Romanian Summer. Students from SJC Brooklyn and SJC Long Island travel to Romania as part of a global studies psychology course.

Centennial Concert. Students, alumni and friends joined us in the celebration of the 100-year milestone of St. Joseph’s College for a special event featuring platinum recording artist Phillip Phillips.
Falling for SJC Brooklyn. Damien Duchamp, chairperson for Hospitality and Tourism Management at SJC Brooklyn, offered his top five picks for fall tourist attractions in Brooklyn and Manhattan.
Defining a Future at SJC. Exploring the true meaning of Investiture at St. Joseph’s College, new students participated in a traditional ceremony that affirms our students’ commitment to SJC.
Sealing their first wins. Both men’s and women’s soccer teams won their first-ever games in the Skyline Conference, and both coaches won their first-ever games at the helm.
National recognition. St. Joseph’s College is once again included in U.S. News & World Report’s 2016-17 list of top Regional Universities in the north, and ranks no. 7 on Washington Monthly’s 2016 “Best Bang for the Buck” list for colleges in the Northeast, beating out Yale and Princeton.
Life as an ESL student. OnCampus explored SJC Brooklyn’s influence as a second home to a diverse group of non-native students.

100 Years Young. SJC celebrated its 100th birthday on Oct. 2.
The Community of Creation. At this year’s Founders Day Lecture, S. Elizabeth Johnson discussed the importance of protecting nature, fellow animals and the Earth.
Celebrating Poet Marie Ponsot. Brooklyn Voices hosted the acclaimed poet and SJC Brooklyn alumna, as well as eight esteemed contemporary poets.
To Google, and Beyond. Twenty-five students toured Google’s Manhattan offices and met with software engineers.

President Named to Brooklyn Power List. SJC President Dr. Jack P. Calareso was named to City and State’s 2016 “Brooklyn Borough 50” list.
What Are You Thankful For? OnCampus set out on SJC’s Brooklyn and Long Island campuses to ask students, faculty and staff what they are thankful for this year.
Confessions of an Ad Man. John McVicker, a 30-year veteran of Madison Avenue’s biggest ad agencies, explored the ins and outs of classic and contemporary advertising, during a special presentation on campus.
“Thank You For Not Tipping.” SJC Brooklyn HTM chair Damien Duchamp discussed the new trend of gratuity-free restaurants and the positive impact on food-service employees.

New Programs. New Opportunities. SJC announces the addition of two new programs for spring 2017: a five-year, combined Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a specialty track in industrial psychology and Executive M.B.A.; and a fully online Advanced Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis
