Alpha Gamma Delta — the first international women’s fraternity at St. Joseph’s College — promotes academic excellence, philanthropic giving, ongoing leadership and personal development. In collaboration with the American Diabetes Association, their chosen international philanthropic focus is diabetes awareness and education.
World Diabetes Day is recognized annually Nov. 14, and the American Diabetes Association marks each November as American Diabetes Month. Tens of millions of people are affected by diabetes, including one in every 11 Americans. Often there are no outward signs of the disease, which creates a critical need to foster awareness and to educate others.
As the disease continues to affect sorority members and their friends and families, the Sisters of Alpha Gamma Delta at SJC Long Island are dedicated to raising awareness.
Alpha Gamma Delta at SJC Long Island participated Oct. 23 in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) One Walk — the largest type 1 diabetes (T1D) event in the world — at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, N.Y. Two days prior to the event, the sisters sold bracelets for $2 on campus, raising over $180 for the foundation. JDFR funds research for T1D and is committed to finding a cure to change the future for people living with the disease.
The best part of this event was not only raising money for a cause that we hold so close to our hearts, but also volunteering at the walk itself and spending time together as a sisterhood while helping out an incredible foundation.” — Jennifer David ’18, philanthropy coordinator of Alpha Gamma Delta
The sorority encourages the College community to push their own limits and find what they are passionate about — whatever it may be. “Alpha Gamma Delta as an organization aids diabetes research, and juvenile diabetes is something that we want to make more people aware of because it truly effects so many people,” said David.
It is our hope to make an impact and empower others to make a positive change not only in our college community but outside of it as well!”
The Sisters will be hosting their second annual Date for Diabetes event Nov. 21, from 6-9 p.m. in Room N317. This is a “speed dating” fundraiser where students will be able to talk about various topics and get to know the organization and its members.
