As part of SJC Brooklyn’s commitment to its mission of sharing the benefits of education to those who stand to benefit from it the most, the Office of Marketing and Communications sponsored its annual school supplies drive Aug. 30 in partnership with the YWCA Brooklyn and national sorority Gamma Sigma Rho.
This event channeled the philanthropic energies of the College, the YWCA Brooklyn and the Sigmas to gather enough supplies to fill over 100 backpacks for low-income learners enrolled in the YW LEAD College Access Program, as well as their siblings. YW LEAD prepares young women for success in higher education through specialized test preparations, college tours, financial literacy programs and leadership development seminars.
“The Brooklyn YWCA believes strongly in creating a culture of economic empowerment for the community and the young women it serves,” said Rolanda Telesford, executive director of external affairs, Brooklyn YWCA. “Our annual back to school event with our partners at St. Joseph’s College and Sigma Gamma Rho enables us to lay the foundation for empowerment for these young women – education.”
Participating families enjoyed a meal provided by UnitedHealthcare and took part in games and a dance party featuring DJ Mike. After games, students and their parents queued up, were handed a backpack, and filled up the bags with school supplies. At the end of the event, the students departed the YWCA Brooklyn having the materials they needed to start the upcoming school year in a position to succeed.
