With the Office of Career Preparation and Professional Development in their corner, SJC Brooklyn students have new and exciting career opportunities at the tips of the fingers.
This semester alone, the office has hosted recruiters from such big-name companies as Doherty Enterprises (the company behind the restaurants Applebee’s and Panera Bread), Wegmans, Acclimate VR and Teq — providing golden opportunities for students golden to meet face-to-face with quality potential employers.
The career preparation office also instructed students — during a special etiquette dinner event this semester — on how to easily impress a would-be employer over a meal.
Students are jumping at the unique chance to bolster their resumes.
Danielle Amato, a junior business administration major, said it was a great opportunity to meet with Wegmans recruiters on campus earlier this month to get a feel for the company. The company’s impressive No. 3 ranking on the Fortune 500 list attracted Amato to the event.
“It’s not just marketing either,” Amato said of a potential Wegmans job. “I could work in the bakery too if I wanted.”
Wegmans representatives Melissa Vetrecin, an employee advocate, and Shawanda Green, a service area manager, were equally enthusiastic about the opportunity to meet with SJC Brooklyn students, considering the campus’ proximity to the grocery chain’s newest addition coming this fall in the Brooklyn Navy Yard — less than a mile from campus.
“We’re excited to come into the community and onboard people who are local,” Vetrecin said.
Wegmans is seeking to fill about 500 positions, Vetrecin noted.
Get Ready for Employment
Students still have plenty of time to meet future employers on campus in the coming weeks.
Watch out for these upcoming career events:

- The JC Penney Suit Up event is Friday, March 29. At the event, students can get useful information about professional attire — and deep discounts (40 percent and up!). It also makes for a fun day in Manhattan.
- The spring Job and Internship Expo is April 3, from noon to 2 p.m. The event provides an opportunity for students to meet with representatives from a variety of employers in one day. Remember to wear professional attire.
