With the fall semester just about upon us, consider taking the summer break’s final weekend to build the mindset for returning to campus by viewing some classic college-related movies. We found an SJC connection in each of these flicks.
“Good Will Hunting”
Will Hunting, a janitor at MIT, has a gift for mathematics, but needs help from a psychologist to find direction in his life.

“Legally Blonde”
Elle Woods, a fashionable sorority queen, is dumped by her boyfriend. She decides to follow him to Harvard Law School to prove that there’s more to her than just her looks.
SJC connection: Consider yourself a young Elle Woods? Check out our pre-law program to help you get ready for law school. But don’t forget to figure out which Greek life organization you’ll join at SJC Brooklyn or SJC Long Island.
“Pitch Perfect”
Beca, a freshman at Barden University, reluctantly joins her school’s all-girl a capella group The Bellas. Bringing some much needed excitement into their repertoire, Beca helps the Bellas take on their male rivals in a campus competition.
SJC connection: Wishing you were one of the Bellas? Join SJC Long Island’s all-female a capella group, SJC Sharps, and start making some memories – and friendships – that will last a lifetime. If you’re attending SJC Brooklyn or you’re a male at SJC Long Island and you want to join an a capella group, consider starting your own.
“Mona Lisa Smile”
A free-thinking art professor teaches conservative 1950s Wellesley girls to question their traditional social roles, inspiring them to be more than they thought they could be.

“Monsters University”
A prequel to “Monsters, Inc.,” this film looks back at the relationship between Mike and Sulley during their days at college – when they weren’t necessarily the best of friends.
SJC connection: Find the Sulley to your Mike by joining one of SJC’s many clubs and organizations (SJC Brooklyn, SJC Long Island).
“Accepted”
After being rejected by every college he applies to, Bartleby (Justin Long) decides to create a fictional college, South Harmon Institute of Technology, on a rundown piece of property near his hometown, just to have a place to show his parents. Soon enough, other students follow suit.”
SJC connection: Much like South Harmon Institution of Technology, SJC offers a broad education in liberal arts.
“Toy Story 3”
The toys are mistakenly delivered to a day-care center instead of the attic right before Andy leaves for college, and it’s up to Woody to convince the other toys that they weren’t abandoned and to return home.
SJC connection: Help little kids have toys of their own that they’ll cherish like Andy cherishes Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the gang. Donate to one of SJC’s toy drives that pop up on campus closer to the holidays, like this one.
“The Great Debaters”
In 1935, professor and poet Melvin B. Tolson inspired students at Wiley College (a predominantly black college in Texas) to start the school’s first debate team. The debate team went on to challenge Harvard in the national championship. This movie is based on these events.
SJC connection: While SJC does not currently have a debate team, those interested should consider starting one.
“22 Jump Street”
In this sequel to “21 Jump Street,” police officers Schmidt and Jenko go undercover again – but this time as college students.
SJC connection: Picture yourself as a Jenko? Consider getting involved athletically. More like Schmidt? Join SJC Brooklyn’s Chapel Players or SJC Long Island’s Drama Society to get involved theatrically. If you’re like both of them and you want to fight crime, check out SJC Brooklyn’s or SJC Long Island’s criminal justice department.
“Rudy”
Rudy has always been told that he was too small to play college football. But he is determined to overcome the odds and fulfill his dream of playing for Notre Dame. But first, he needs to get accepted into Notre Dame and transfer there from nearby Holy Cross College.
