The child study and adolescence education departments cohosted a Destination: Teacher Education event with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions on April 26, bringing nearly 50 admitted first-year students for fall 2019 to campus.
The event kicked off with a student panel moderated by Joe Lemke ’04, Ed.D., history lecturer at SJC Long Island and head of Bay Shore High School’s history department. During the discussion, prospective students asked current students about coursework, classroom observations and involvement at the College. Next, the SJC Long Island students hosted sample interactive teaching demonstrations for the guests.
“One of the admitted students at my table told me that having the chance to see SJC student teachers in action through their demo lessons was a comfort,” shared S. Mary Ann Cashin, C.S.J., assistant professor of child study. “She was able to see what could happen for her as she went through the teacher preparation program at St. Joseph’s.”
Additionally, Director of the Office of Career Preparation and Professional Development Jennifer Rooney shared how St. Joseph’s education graduates are prepared for interviews. She added that students should start the career planning process during their first year at the College. Tours of the Callahan Library were also hosted.
“This was an excellent opportunity for our newly admitted child study and adolescence education students to spend the day on campus, learn about the details of each of these highly successful programs, experience for themselves each of the programs through classroom demonstrations, and meet other freshman education students entering SJC this fall,” Executive Director of Admissions Debra Walling said.
