More than 500 students attended SJC Long Island’s Club Fair Thursday, Sept. 12, in the Danzi Athletic Center Gymnasium, to learn about the many different opportunities to get involved at the campus.
“I was really interested to see what different clubs the College offers,” said freshman Ivette Balcacer, who is leaning toward majoring in either nursing or criminal justice. “I visited a few tables, but I’m interested in the Criminal Justice Club and one of the sororities. I don’t know if I’m going to join yet. I’m just getting the feel of it and seeing what I like.”
The annual event invites students new and old to get acquainted with the more than 50 clubs and organizations offered at SJC Long Island.
“There are a lot of different clubs and ways to meet people,” Elizabeth Conde, a freshman, said. “I’m interested in joining Project Sunshine because I like helping people, and I like the idea of going to the hospital and being able to put a smile on a kid’s face.”
Arefina Talukder, an orientation team leader in her junior year, was glad so many freshmen and transfer students expressed an interest in getting involved.
“Even though it’s a commuter school, there are so many clubs offered,” she said. “Students don’t even have to stay on campus to be active. They can go off campus and help with the environment and the local community. It’s nice to see that freshmen engage with these kinds of events. And it’s nice for them to see that St. Joseph’s has so much to offer.”

“I came here looking for something new to do aside from sports and homework,” freshman Jahn Castro, a member of the Golden Eagles men’s soccer team, said of Club Fair. “I’m hopeful I’ll find something that may broaden my spectrum. Maybe art, or another way to get involved with athletics.”
