St. Joseph’s College on Friday will recognize the 19th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.
At SJC Brooklyn, a small ceremony that will be live-streamed on Zoom will convene in the Memorial Courtyard behind St. Angela Hall in remembrance of those lost in the 2001 attack and those who have since died due to illnesses related to Sept. 11. Members of the campus’ Student Veteran Association will take part in the ceremony, hosted by the Office of Student Life.
Those who have a loved one, friend, alumni, first responder, or colleague who died on 9/11 or as a result of the relief efforts can leave the person’s name on a card in the Prayer Bowl in the Office of Student Life. The names will be read aloud at Friday’s memorial service.
In 2005, the College dedicated the courtyard to the alumni, and relatives of SJC alumni, who died on Sept. 11, 2001 — including Jennifer Mazzotta ’00, Paul Rizza ’99 and Richard Catarelli ’76. A plaque adorns the entrance to the courtyard.
Mazzotta was a young trader at Cantor Fitzgerald who was engaged to be married at the time of the attack. Rizza worked as an investors services officer with Fiduciary Trust International. Catarelli was a senior vice president with Marsh & McLennan. Each worked at the World Trade Center.
At SJC Long Island, the Office of Student Life is directing the community to tune in to a 9/11 ceremony at the Patchogue VFW, through a live-stream on Facebook. Many of SJC Long Island’s student veterans are members of the VFW.
