Thanksgiving Food Drive is a Hit

The SJC Brooklyn community joined forces this month to donate nonperishable food to families in need, ahead of Thanksgiving.

The College collected an assortment of nonperishable items for the food drive, including cereal, juice boxes, instant mashed potatoes and gravy. The drive benefitted Grandma’s Love, Inc., a Brooklyn-based nonprofit that provides food to elementary school children and their families who might otherwise go hungry.

Michele Corsetti, the campus’ coordinator of residence life and community service, said the Information Technology department and the faculty and staff at the Dillon Child Study Center were among the biggest supporters of the food drive this year.

This food drive marks the fifth time the College came together to donate to Grandma’s Love during the Thanksgiving season. Corsetti expressed pride and gratitude for the generous donations to help families struggling — especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Despite the change in circumstances, the SJC community still came together to support this amazing organization,” Corsetti said. “This proves, once again, why St. Joseph’s College is so special.”

Theresa Monforte-Caraballo, founder and executive director of Grandma’s Love, thanked SJC Brooklyn for its support in a Facebook post on Tuesday after receiving the donations.

“My St. Joseph’s College family did it again,” Monforte-Caraballo said. “Thanksgiving 2020 is a win-win. Our families are so blessed to have so much support from all our supporters throughout the year, but especially in these trying times.”
