Enrique’s Path to St. Joe’s
Before deciding to attend St. Joseph’s University, New York, Enrique Gress ’26 wasn’t sure college was the path for him, but after four years at the Long Island campus, he couldn’t be happier with his decision.
“Before I committed to St. Joseph’s, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to come to the school,” said Gress. “However, St. Joseph’s has helped shape me and aided me in choosing what I wish to do for the rest of my life.”
Gress chose SJNY for the small class sizes, close relationships with professors and ability to remain home and continue his work at the Centereach Fire Department, Engine Company 2.
Looking Back on St. Joseph’s Mentorship
As a biology major with a minor in chemistry, having close relationships with professors was essential. Throughout his time at SJNY, Dr. Valerie Giordano had the biggest impact on not only Gress’ education but also his personal growth.
“Dr. G was one of the first professors I met and had when I began my time here at St. Joseph’s; from there, she would not just watch me become the person and biology student I am today, but I’d have the honor to conduct my research project under Dr. G. I got the opportunity to work on non-small lung cancer cells and conduct a research experiment using toad venom along with adriamycin (an aggressive form of chemotherapy). This research helped in seeing if a less potent, more easily accessible, and more readily available substance could aid in reducing the effects and amount of a more aggressive therapy,” Gress stated.
Core Memories
With commencement less than a month away, Gress couldn’t be more thankful for his father for pushing him and for all of the experiences SJNY has offered.
“One of my favorite experiences here at SJNY has been the Washington D.C. conference that I and the rest of the Student Government Association got to take part in,” said Gress.
As he is reflecting on the last four years, attending SJNY has helped shape Gress into the person he is today.
“SJNY helped shape me into who you see now, from a quiet, shy person to the open, more energetic, and fun person I am today. St. Joseph’s has also helped me establish many connections that can and will help me in the future,” said Gress.
After graduation, Gress plans on joining either the New York Fire Department or the Suffolk County Police Department but, in the meantime, is joining the Brookhaven National Lab and continuing his work as an emergency medical technician with the possibility of enrolling in a paramedic program.
Though he has given many incoming students advice through his time as an orientation leader and Student Government Association secretary, he is leaving with one last tip.
Advice to Students
“No Risk, No Fun. Take any and all opportunities you are given, make connections, and get out there; SJNY will open many doors for you. Take every single opportunity.”
