An April Fool’s discovery to remember started out this month at SJC, and an unforgettable presentation by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Rory Kennedy rounded it out. While we look forward to our graduation ceremonies later this May, let’s take a look back at what got us here!

April 4 — ASB to Oklahoma!
While most college students were heading south toward sunny beaches this March,a group of 30 St. Joseph’s students, faculty and staff from both campuses were Oklahoma-bound — setting out to assist Moore, Oklahoma, an area recently stricken from a series of tornados and earthquakes.
April 5 — She Came Back to SJC … Eventually
The inspiring story of SJC alumna Cathleen Srour ’88, who left SJC as a sophomore in 1958, yet returned to SJC Brooklyn decades later and earned her undergraduate degree in 1988.
April 6 — A New Partnership
As part of its ongoing mission to serve its surrounding community and address unmet needs in the local educational ecosystem, SJC Brooklyn has partnered again with the Tzu Chi Foundation to bring its SAT prep program to recently arrived immigrants who are learning English as a new language.
April 7 — The Journey for Answers
2017 Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow Caitlin Shetterly travels across the country to find out more about GMOs and the effects they have on our bodies.
April 11 — Breaking Barriers, Building Minds
Voices From the Inside. Mass Murderers and Serial Killers. The Trump Presidency. These might sound like the latest Netflix originals waiting to be binge watched by college students across the globe, but, actually, they are three of 23 new and captivating courses SJC Long Island students can enroll in for the fall 2017 semester.
April 19 — Brooklyn Voices Presents Chris Hayes
Chris Hayes, a household name for his MSNBC show All In with Chris Hayes, recently added another accomplishment to his growing resume: a new novel. Published in March, A Colony in a Nation takes a thought-provoking look at racial inequality in America. Wesley Lowery, journalist for The Washington Post and Pulitzer Prize-winner for his project that was the first to comprehensively track police shootings, is no stranger to the topic of law and order.
April 19 — Introducing the Humans of SJCNY
Some of us probably know someone at SJC with an interesting story. But most of us may never hear it.
Being a commuter school has its benefits. Students are able to maintain jobs and lifestyles while taking courses that will further their careers. Since many students are on the go, many of their stories go untold. The College’s newest social media campaign, Humans of SJCNY, looks to share the personal side of St. Joseph’s diverse student body at SJC Brooklyn and SJC Long Island.
April 20 — Spiking the Competition
The inaugural season of the new men’s volleyball team at SJC Long Island exceeds expectations. Here, we profile Coach of the Year Bill Kropp and Rookie of the Year Kyle Biggers, as well as the success of the new squad.
April 21 — Accounting for Success
Offering a major, minor and dual degree, SJC Long Island’s Department of Accounting provides students with the knowledge and skills required of today’s business and accounting professionals.
April 24 —Road to the American Dream
Stefany Henriquez ’18 developed an interest in law and criminal justice at a young age. As the daughter of police officers, she grew up listening to the stories her parents would tell about their careers in law enforcement while the family lived in El Salvador.
April 27 — Earth Week at SJC
SJC Long Island’s Sustainability Committee hosted a series of events for Earth Week leading up to the 47th anniversary of Earth Day on Saturday, April 22.
During Earth Week, students and faculty took on two clean-up efforts – along the College’s Nature Trail behind the Clare Rose Playhouse and in Patchogue Lake, located on the east side of campus.
April 27 — Rory Kennedy at SJC
An Academy Award nominated, Primetime Emmy-award winning director/producer, Kennedy presented SJC’s 2017 Presidential Lecture, “The Camera Doesn’t Lie: Social Change through Documentary Filmmaking” at both campuses, on separate days, in late April.
