Teachers are a culmination of the great educators who taught them; they are molded by the minds of those who inspired them.
SJC Long Island’s members of Kappa Delta Pi (KDP), an international honor society of education, recognized this in a heartwarming ceremony called Celebration of Teaching Tuesday night.

“The Celebration of Teaching is Kappa Delta Pi’s newest signature service initiative,” said senior Kaitlyn Rodriguez, president of KDP and SGA at SJC Long Island. This new program encourages KDP members to support current teachers, cultivate future teachers and advocate for our profession by celebrating the exceptional educators and professors who go above and beyond in the field of education.”
The students who make up KDP’s Alpha Theta Omega chapter at St. Joseph’s College honored the professors and cooperating teachers who helped them on their journeys to becoming educators. The instructors honored during the inaugural ceremony received awards in such categories as Most Inspiration, Most Organized, Most Creative and Most Caring.
Honoring Our Very Own
Awards received by SJC Long Island faculty were as follows:
• Most Inspirational was presented by Kaitlyn Rodriguez to Jane St. Pierre, senior lecturer of child study.
• Most Organized was presented by Danielle DeGirolamo to Anna Malzone, senior lecturer of music and director of the Council for the Arts.
• Trendiest was presented by KDP Vice President Kate Shields to Margaret Moss, P.D., assistant professor of education.
• Most Creative was presented by Emily Dinger to Nicole Shiffmacher, lecturer of child study and infant/toddler early childhood special education.
• Most Caring was presented by Kate Shields to Marc Ricciardi, Ph.D., associate professor of English.
• Most Interesting was presented by the KDP Executives to S. Nancy Gilchriest, S.S.N.D., Ed.D., chair and associate professor of education.
• The Kappa Delta Pi Alpha Theta Omega Award was presented by the KDP Executives to S. Mary Ann Cashin, C.S.J., assistant professor of child study.
