The St. Joseph’s College community has provided a wave of support to the College Wednesday on its inaugural Giving Day, helping an array of programs reach their fundraising goals with seven hours still remaining in the fundraising event.
The Giving Day campaign is a 24-hour fundraiser, celebrating St. Joseph the Worker Day. The goal to raise funds from at least 400 donors has already been obliterated, with more than 825 donors — as of 4:30 p.m. — stepping up to help the cause and support the SJC Fund, along with many other worthy projects proposed by St. Joseph’s students, faculty and staff.
Tuition alone doesn’t cover the full cost for a student to have an outstanding education. The SJC Fund is integral to providing scholarship support and important experiences on and off campus.
Program campaigns across both campuses already surpassed their goals, including the Golden Eagle Athletic Fund ($7,233), the Student Emergency Fund ($2,553) and the Alternative Spring Break Fund ($751).
All together, Giving Day has raised more than $51,000.
St. Joseph’s President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., was filled with pride as he reviewed the results.
“The astonishing and positive response for our first Giving Day by the College community, alums and lovers of St. Joseph’s from all quarters has been wonderful,” Dr. Boomgaarden said. “I know that these gifts are symbols of the love so many have for our College, and for all we stand for.”
As the day progresses other campaigns — including the digital archives for the Callahan and McEntegart libraries, SJC Vets’ Trauma and Transition Fund, SJC Online Faculty Development, and the Cultural Events Fund for the ACES Program at SJC Brooklyn— are still looking for support to reach their goals.

Giving to a Special Cause
Students, faculty and staff at St. Joseph’s two campuses were bustling to donate to causes close to their hearts.
Shaheera Yousuf, a freshman at SJC Long Island, said she donated to support the College’s affordability. “The reason I like to give to St. Joseph’s is I like to support the scholarship funds,” she noted.
Barbara Traola ’72, assistant professor of child study and special education placement coordinator at SJC Long Island added to that sentiment.
“I give to pay it forward and to preserve the traditions and values that I received at St. Joseph’s College,” she said.
At SJC Brooklyn, there was a lot of excitement surrounding individual project campaigns.
“In the morning we had a bunch of nursing students come by,” said Judy Ganeles, associate director prospect research, as she sat behind a Giving Day table in McEntegart Hall. “They were really enthusiastic about the Pumped for Pumps fund.”
The “Pumped for Pumps — IVs, Not Shoes” fund was created to purchase new IVs for nursing students to use in the nursing labs.
Thanks to the enthusiasm of the SJC community, the Board of Trustee challenge has been reached! $9,000 will be donated and divided among our crowdfunding projects! Thank you! #readysetgive pic.twitter.com/EPcitXcwWN
