The Winston Foundation, Inc. — longtime supporters of programs that make a difference to people, and frequently students, through its generous giving — continued to help fund the nursing simulation labs at SJC Long Island in 2017 and 2018. The labs allow nursing students to hone their skills on high-fidelity simulation mannequins.
“There is such a significant need for nurses, both those graduating with their bachelor’s degree in nursing, and those becoming trained as more specialized nurse practitioners,” said Nancy Rifkind with The Winston Foundation. “The Foundation is proud to be able to assist in better preparing these nurses for the increasingly demanding health care field.”
The College is thankful for the impactful support, said Maria Fletcher, Ph.D., director of SJC’s nursing program.
“The students are definitely benefitting from being able to practice their skills on life-like mannequins, which provide real-world feedback,” she said. “This responsiveness allows the students to learn and develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.”
The nursing simulation labs at SJC Long Island feature four simulator mannequins: a man, a woman, a pregnant woman and a child. The simulators replicate medical challenges students may encounter when they enter local hospitals, clinics and medical practice facilities.
“We are grateful for the leadership and generosity of The Winston Foundation, Inc. for their continued support of the SJC nursing program, which is allowing St. Joseph’s College to train the next generation of committed, caring nurses to serve the local community when they graduate,” St. Joseph’s President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D., said.
