Celebrating the Founding of the Sisters of St. Joseph

The St. Joseph’s College community today is recognizing the 370th anniversary of the founding of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph.

Founded on Oct. 15, 1650 in LePuy, France, the religious community and has grown to serve 53 countries. It includes the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood branch, which founded St. Joseph’s College in 1916.

To celebrate the founding of the Sisters of St. Joseph, campus ministry at SJC Brooklyn will hand out free pins today, Oct. 15, that say “You Are My Dear Neighbor,” as well as a copy of “That All May Be One,” published by the Association of Colleges of the Sisters of St. Joseph, outside of the Student Life Suite in Tuohy Hall.

The “You Are My Dear Neighbor” pin refers to the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph — to bring all into unity with God, with one another, and with all creation through prayer, direct service and ministry, partnering with others to serve the dear neighbor, standing with and for the poor and vulnerable, and by advocating for systemic change.

Last month, campus ministry at SJC Long Island held a special showcase event to honor the book “That All May Be One.”

The St. Joseph’s College community often collaborates with the Sisters of St. Joseph, reminding students of the College’s roots, through the annual Day of Service, internships, Founders Day lectures, and more.
