Allison’s Road to St. Joe’s
Growing up, Allison Sauer ’26 always imagined herself as a helper to society. By attending speech therapy as a child, she quickly realized speech pathology to be her calling in life, as well as the institution that would help foster her skills and knowledge in the field: St. Joseph’s University, New York.
“The positive memories of speech therapy inspired me to pursue a career in speech pathology and led me to committing to St. Joseph’s and pursuing a major in speech-language pathology and audiology,” Sauer said.
Enrolling in St. Joseph’s as a speech-language pathology and audiology major only made sense. The University being close to her hometown of Bayport allowed Sauer to attend classes and continue to work full-time, while its career-focused curriculum and clubs would support her aspirations of becoming speech pathologist.
Core Memories
With graduate school on the horizon, Sauer is reflecting on some of the moments at St. Joseph’s that have set the stage for her next chapter.
“Being the president of NSSLHA has been one of the best undergraduate experiences of my career. I truly have bonded with so many amazing students as president and have had the opportunity to expand my horizons educationally and personally,” she continued.
Within the next five years, Sauer is looking to fulfill that childhood idealization of helping others. She would like to help those struggling with speech and language, hoping to put her knowledge to use in schools, hospitals or a private practice. And though her vision for the future is as clear as day, her time at St. Joseph’s has taught her to keep an open mind to all possibilities.
Mentorship at St. Joseph’s
For Sauer, all of her speech-pathology professors had a part to play in making her four years at SJNY a memorable experience.
“Although I have taken many classes as an undergraduate student at St. Joseph’s, every professor within the speech-language pathology and audiology major has been so impactful on my journey,” Saucer said.
She continued, “Every professor within this major is so determined to make undergraduate study not only interesting, but is determined to make every student successful. All the professors within speech-language pathology and audiology are so personable and truly emulate the energy students need to succeed.”
