In 2023, Eileen Conway ’23, ’25 completed the first step toward her goal of becoming a social worker when she graduated from St. Joseph’s University, New York Online (SJNY Online) with a B.S. in Human Services. This month, she completes the next step toward her goal when she walks across the stage after earning a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree.
Before deciding to switch gears and become a social worker, Conway had a decades-long career as a nurse, devoted to various roles as a wound nurse, supervisor, direct care nurse for individuals with developmental disabilities and in outpatient ambulatory care.
“I was interested in social work to make changes within the community,” Conway said. “My experience as a nurse has allowed me to connect the physical aspect with the mental and environmental aspects of individuals.”
With one SJNY degree completed, Conway was drawn to St. Joe’s MSW program because of the hybrid schedule that is offered to students.
“St. Joseph’s offered the best program to fit my needs, allowing me to work full-time while obtaining my MSW,” she said. “Before I began, Dr. Durovich (Jo Anne Durovich, Ph.D., LMSW, director of SJNY’s MSW program) offered continuous support and explained the program and ways it could meet my needs.”
Conway also credits Dr. Durovich in helping her explore opportunities she did not know were available.
“Dr. Durovich has so much to offer and the ability to guide students in directions she knows them to be well suited for,” she said. “I am so appreciative that she was willing to go above and beyond her role to help me and other students fulfill our dreams.”
In addition, Kelly Zinn, DSW, LMSW, assistant teaching professor, had a profound impact on Conway.
“Dr. Zinn’s expertise and guidance have led me to know this was the correct choice for the next part of my journey. She is an amazing professor,” she said.
Inspired by her daughter’s positive attitude and enjoyment of all that life has to offer, Conway fully immersed herself at St. Joseph’s and made connections with her peers.
“There are many different people in the program and they all come from different backgrounds,” said Conway. “It has been interesting to form friendships and support one another through this experience.”
After graduating this month, Conway will continue her education with a goal of earning a doctoral degree while working as a social worker in both private practice and as a community liaison in marginalized areas.
And, for future students, she offers this advice: “Nothing is unattainable. Work hard, be kind and the rest will come to you.”
