SJC Long Island’s Council for the Arts (CFA) is offering an array of ways for students, faculty and staff to take a break from academics and enjoy art this semester.
Take a look below at the campus’ list of upcoming art events. Be sure to check back throughout the semester, as more events and dates will be added.
Waterscapes by Ross Barbera
Jan. 24 – Feb. 25 • Board Room Gallery
Ross Barbera’s paintings focus on the details of water surfaces mingling with landscape elements. The pieces featured in this exhibition reflect his ongoing series dedicated to capturing views of freshwater environments, including ponds, snowmelt flows and mountain streams.
Fiber Arts
Feb. 26 – April 8 • Board Room Gallery
In recognition of Women’s History Month, SJC Long Island’s CFA presents the art exhibition “Fiber Arts.” Working with textiles is not exclusive to women, but it is traditionally associated with women’s work in the domestic sphere — and thus historically devalued in the art world. This exhibition celebrates weaving, knotting, coiling and hooking fiber in appreciation of the labor-intensive creative visions of women artists including Ellen Dickinson, Amy Miller, Sally Shore and Marcia Widenor.
Virtual Artist Talk: Pioneer of Feminist Art, Miriam Schapiro
Wednesday, March 30 • Common Hour
Join Stacey Weir, who teaches “Women in the History of Art” at St. Joseph’s College, for a virtual presentation. She will lead a Q&A discussion on Miriam Schapiro, a pioneer of the Feminist Art Movement. Contact Anna Malzone, director of the CFA, at amalzone@sjny.edu for the Zoom link. The presentation will stream in Room N117.
Student Art Show
April 9 – May 9 • Board Room Gallery
The annual Student Art Show includes exemplary artworks created by SJC Long Island art students. Featured in this year’s exhibit are works of diverse media, including paintings, drawing, ceramics, fiber, mixed media and digital processes.
More workshops and virtual or outdoor activities will be added here throughout the semester. Learn more about upcoming events and stay up to date with the CFA on Facebook or Instagram at @SJCLICFA.
If you are interested in attending any on-campus CFA events and you are not an SJC student, faculty or staff member, please contact Malzone at 631.687.1434 or amalzone@sjny.edu.
