St. Joseph’s University, New York students at the Long Island Campus interested in learning more about a yearlong service opportunity gathered in the Shea Conference Room Wednesday, Oct. 26, during common hour to hear from Lisa Murphy, co-director of the St. Joseph Worker Program (SJWP) in St. Paul, Minnesota.
SJWP, which is open to women between the ages of 21 and 30, invites women to follow in the footsteps of the Sisters of St. Joseph while they prepare for a lifelong commitment to social change. In addition to a location in Minnesota, there are also locations in Los Angeles and Orange, California.
“The landscape of young adult life is changing, especially in the past couple of years,” Murphy said. “As I recruit for the St. Joseph Worker Program this fall, I try to spend some time listening to what young adults are looking for in a service year and what turns them away from doing service.”
Hosted by the Office of Campus Ministry, eight young women with a passion for service and social responsibility sat down with Murphy to learn more about this opportunity through the St. Joseph Worker Program.
“After attending the CSSJ Federation Event over the summer and meeting with former St. Joseph Workers, I’ve felt inspired to take part in some kind of service after graduation,” said Danielle Saint Laurent, a senior child study major with a concentration in Spanish. “Being able to learn more about this program and other opportunities is a great next step for me as I reflect on what lies ahead.”
