Before we fully embrace 2019, we’re saying goodbye to 2018 with a recap of some of St. Joseph’s College’s important moments over the past year.
JANUARY
SJC Brooklyn Bear Victoria Porcasi ’19 and SJC Long Island Golden Eagles Isaiah Moore ’18 and Andrea Iavarone ’18 each eclipse 1,000 career points as members of St. Joseph’s College basketball teams.
FEBRUARY
SJC Long Island’s Conor Johnson ’18 and Nicholas Bates ’18, along with SJC Brooklyn’s Juanita Arias ’18, go to Albany to speak with state legislators on Lobby Day to fight to keep the Bundy Direct Aid Project, which provides unrestricted support to students at independent colleges and universities — including St. Joseph’s College.
MARCH
St. Jospeh’s College hosts installation ceremonies at both campuses for the College’s eighth president Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D.
A group of 20 St. Joseph’s College students travel to Houston in March to spend their spring break helping people still reeling from the damage wreaked by Hurricane Harvey.
APRIL
St. Joseph’s College welcomes Rory Shaffer-Walsh as the school’s new vice president for institutional advancement.
The Sisters of St. Joseph host a heartwarming Presidential Mass for St. Joseph’s College’s newest President Donald R. Boomgaarden, Ph.D.
MAY
St. Joseph’s College student leaders and seniors are honored for their many accomplishments at Leadership Luncheon events.
Between two commencement ceremonies, St. Joseph’s College confers nearly 1,400 degrees to 2018 graduates.
JUNE
St. Joseph’s students, faculty and alumni travel the world in search of educational experience.
SJC Long Island senior Danielle Guercio works closely with Valerie Giordano, Ph.D., associate professor of biology, in St. Joseph’s biology labs researching treatment options for bladder cancer.
JULY
SJC faculty and staff celebrate World Emoji Day by guessing movie titles based on the emojis they were shown.
AUGUST
Both campuses welcome their newest students at Orientation.
SEPTEMBER
SJC Long Island honors the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack during an annual ceremony in front of O’Connor Hall. The SJC Brooklyn community partakes in creative service activities to commemorate the anniversary.
Surrounded by family and loved ones, the Class of 2022 is formally invested into the College community after reciting the Oath of Integrity and turning their tassels — an act that symbolizes the beginning of their time as college students — during Investiture.
OCTOBER
Political reporter Richard Benedetto hosts four lectures as the Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellow at St. Joseph’s College — two each at SJC Long Island and SJC Brooklyn — about the state of journalism in America.
St. Joseph’s College students, faculty and staff raise money for breast cancer awareness, donating more than $7,000 to the American Cancer Society.
NOVEMBER
A group of 10 junior and senior nursing students at St. Joseph’s College receive a golden ticket to Northwell Health’s 2019 Golden Ticket Nursing Showcase, where they will meet high-level administrators and interact with nurses and other staff.
Six faculty members — four of whom are recent alumni — and one student from the St. Joseph’s College English department present at the 29th annual Mid-Atlantic Popular & American Culture Association (MAPACA) Conference in Baltimore, Maryland.
DECEMBER
The St. Joseph’s College community gets in the giving spirit during the holiday season through such efforts as coat drives, gift drives, wrapping parties, making Christmas cards for children in hospitals and more.
