The Institute for the Study of Religion in Community Life will host a Kristallnacht commemoration at St. Joseph’s University, New York’s Long Island campus on Tuesday, Nov. 15.
“An Evening of Jewish-Christian Dialogue in Remembrance of Kristallnacht” — an annual University event before the COVID-19 pandemic — will be held in the McGann Conference Center in O’Connor Hall at 6 p.m. with a Kosher buffet.
“Kristallnacht, or the ‘Night of Broken Glass,’ is the annual commemoration of the antisemitic violence that occurred in Nazi Germany on the night of Nov. 9-10, 1938,” said Thomas Petriano, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Religious Studies at St. Joseph’s. “With antisemitism on the rise, it’s more important now than ever that we remember the events that led to the Holocaust.”
St. Joseph’s history professors Seth Armus, Ph.D., and Nerissa K. Aksamit, Ph.D. will offer reflections on Ken Burns’ PBS documentary “The U.S. and the Holocaust” before an open session for questions and discussion.
Members of the University community, local churches, and Temple Beth El in Patchogue, will participate in the commemoration.
The event — open to the public with a registration fee of $10 — will conclude with Kaddish.
